An Outage as Opportunity
Precon Demolition & Replacement
Blast Furnace - Ecorse, Michigan
There’s nothing like using scheduled “down time” to get other major work done.
That was the Songer approach to the complete demolition and replacement of a deficient Precon unit at the B2 Blast Furnace for the US Steel Great Lakes Works in Ecorse, Michigan during a company-scheduled shotcrete outage for the furnace.
The project also included the replacement of the scrubber and ancillary towers—and since the furnace would not start up at the completion of the outage, the project timeline was extended by the customer and allowed Songer Services to come in under budget.
Songer Services self-performed all ironwork, boilermaker work, masonry work, and civil work associated with the project. Demolition, heavy lifting, pipefitting, and electrical work were subcontracted, and the entire project was completed without any major incidents or injuries.
We made the most of the opportunity presented to us during scheduled maintenance at a furnace—a win-win for everyone involved.
