Maintenance Without Fanfare

Maintenance Construction Within Existing Plant
Hot Strip Mill Cooling Tower Fan Replacement - Gary, IN

When the time came to replace a vital part of a hot strip mill, US Steel hired veteran integrated steel maintenance experts who knew how to keep their cool.

Songer was hired to replace the C Cell’s fan rotor and gearbox as part of scheduled maintenance for the hot strip mill at the Gary Works in Gary, Indiana—the largest manufacturing plant in the US Steel family.

The new rotor was pre-assembled on the ground, attached to the new gearbox and flown in one piece to reduce the amount of time the cooling tower had to be offline. Songer millwrights performed a precise motor-to-gearbox laser alignment to assure maximum fan efficiency.

The project was completed on time and under budget without any safety incidents, and required nimble project planning and specialized union craft management for equipment setting and heavy lifting for the cooling tower’s new fan assembly.

An Outage as Opportunity

Songer used a scheduled U.S. Steel shotcrete outage to fully deliver an on-time, on-budget demo and replacement of a deficient Precon unit, scrubber & ancillary maintenance towers.
