Justin Beton Earns John P. "Jack" Daley Safety Award
On February 11, 2026, Justin Beton, an Ironworker at US Steel Edgar Thomson Works, received the John P. “Jack” Daley Safety Award for his leadership during the #3 Blast Furnace Shotcrete Outage.
Justin and his crew faced several challenges that made the project far from routine, requiring personnel to work:
- At height
- In confined spaces
- Around hot work
- Alongside multiple crafts
- Under tight time pressure with the furnace being taken down for the outage
Justin took ownership of coordinating the ironworkers at the Caster. Before work began, he spent time planning the scope, identifying exposure points, and consulting with both US Steel and Songer safety leadership to make sure protections were in place.
During execution, Justin stayed engaged:
- Addressed hazards immediately
- Reinforced expectations daily
- Participated in safety walks
- Spoke up when conditions changed
- Made sure every ironworker understood the plan
Justin's dedication to the project, as well as that of his fellow crew members, is a testament to the greatness Songer Services strives for every day. Great work, Justin!
